Content management gives clients access to their site to add news stories, images, and edit pages, without understanding HTML. It can do much more, with customisation. For example, allowing different parts of the organisation to write content, while different people can edit and control publication.
Content management systems can:
- automate submission of new pages to Google and other search engines
- have pages set to publish (and withdraw) on specific dates and times
- have ability to provide different content for registered users
- allow one story to be displayed in different places (e.g. homepage teaser AND news)
- provide simple management of menu changes
- give simple ways to link content to social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter
- offer simple integration with Google Analytics
- give the ability to manage META tags and page descriptions, critical for good ranking on Google, site wide or page by page
- automate update of Google sitemaps for quick
- answer a favourite response to client questions, "I'm sure there's a Drupal module for that!"
I work with Drupal and WordPress currently. Also historically with Adobe Contribute, but clients are increasingly looking for finer control, and the ability to subscribe to news updates through RSS.
