Get a PDF to load in Acrobat not Internet Explorer

Two clients asking in a week!

Why do Acrobat PDF's insist on opening in the browser window (in Internet Explorer anyway) rather than as an independent file? I'll ignore the obvious advice to try another browser like Firefox or Safari.

It's down to the Windows operating system, which prefers to control as many file types itself as possible. Audio, video, Office, portable like PDF...

If you want to regain control of PDF format documents, here it goes:

Configuring the browser to open PDF files in an Acrobat window

If you want the browser to open PDF files in a separate Acrobat window, configure the browser to use Acrobat or Adobe Reader as a helper application. Then, when you select a PDF file in Internet Explorer, the browser opens the PDF file in an Acrobat window instead of the browser window.

To configure the browser to use Acrobat or Adobe Reader to open PDF files:

1. Quit Internet Explorer

2. Start Acrobat or Adobe Reader.

3. Choose Edit > Preferences.

4. Select Internet in the list on the left.

5. Deselect Display PDF in Browser, and click OK.

6. Restart Internet Explorer

Try downloading a file - it should open in Acrobat where you can save it, print it, or ignore it. With the same web page left open in Internet Explorer.
